Elegance & Flair

The Sopranos

By Christine Bolaños

The opera world can oftentimes seem intimidating to outsiders looking in. It can seem luxurious, elitist, beautiful, but out-of-touch. Even in today’s world it is not often that Latinas obtain the highly-coveted title of soprano, a type of classical singing voice that has the highest vocal range of all voice types. But even though Latinas are under-represented in the Opera world it is not for lack of talent but merely lack of accessibility and opportunity. And three supremely talented Latinas- Gabrielle Reyes, Maria Brea and Denis Vélez- are doing their part to ensure they not only share their magnificent voices, their culture and heritage, and their unique perspectives on stages across the world, they are doing their part to lead the way for generations of Latina Opera singers to come.
